    The new ANC

    Electing the next president

    By Carol Paton

The process to select the ANC's candidate for state president and the rest of its parliamentary representatives will happen shortly before the general election, scheduled for mid year 2009.

The process is similar to the one for the ANC party elections. Branches meet and make nominations. These are then forwarded to provincial list conferences. At the list conferences, branch representatives vote on all the nominations put forward.

Finally, a national conference is held and the list of around 300 people finalised. The presidential candidate is also voted on and tops the list.

Jacob Zuma would be the most likely presidential candidate given the party's preference that its leader also be head of government. However, if he is convicted of a crime, another candidate will need to be found. The most likely second choice would be ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe.
