COVER STORY

The interconnect dilemma

Computer chips have got smaller and faster but cannot get much faster if they continue to send data on copper wires.

The solution may lie in transferring data using optics (light) instead of electrons on copper.

But the solution has to be compatible with silicon chips because the entire semiconductor industry is silicon-based - it's a billion-dollar sunk investment.

The problem is that silicon is not a good generator of light.

Whoever gets the answer first stands to make a fortune.
