SOCIAL TRENDS AND LEISURE - GADGETS

Gizmos and goodies

Toby Shapshak, editor of Stuff magazine, goes in search of some of the must-have toys for 2009.

iPhone 3G - The ultimate iPod is now legitimately available in SA, with 3G speeds and the best mobile Internet experience on a cellphone yet. Believe the hype.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - Nicknamed Tube, Nokia's first touchscreen phone isn't an iPhone killer, but a free year of music from a catalogue of millions of songs is certainly a killer app.

MacBook - Apple's stunning new aluminium encased MacBooks have better graphics, a bright, ultrathin backlit screen, and a glass multitouch trackpad which forgoes a mouse button.

MTN F@stlink B970 - The best thing since USB 3G dongles, the B970 is a 3G cellular modem which is also a wireless hotspot, with four Ethernet ports and a traditional phone jack. Perfect for home or small offices.

BlackBerry Bold - The best BlackBerry yet has a revamped look and feel befitting its smartphone status and still does e-mail better than any other mobile phone.

Acer Aspire One - Acer's dinky Aspire One is the best of the new ultraportable "netbook" computers, which weigh less than a kilogram and retail for as little as R5 000.

Canon EOS 1000D - Stuff's camera of the year is an even better buy than its predecessors, with Live View and 10 megapixels. A good entry-level digital SLR.

HP Touchsmart IQ500 - With a 22-inch (55 cm) touchscreen and a clever way of navigating your digital files, playing music, videos and surfing the Web using your finger, the Touchsmart IQ500 is like a desktop iPhone.

Sony Bravia KLV-40W400A HDTV - A Full HD wonder television with 40 inches (102 cm) of superb picture quality that makes even normal TV look good.

DStv HD PVR - MultiChoice's high-definition (HD) decoder has its software problems but its picture quality is superb, and once you've tasted HDTV, there's no going back.
