    Homework club

    BACK TO BASICS

    By Ethel Hazelhurst

Elihle Mnguni is 20 and in her second year at Cida City Campus. She lives in Soweto . "My mom has always been a housewife. My father died 11 years ago and we live on his pension," she says.

Mnguni is studying to be an accountant. "Through Cida I am doing a course with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"Cida is a brilliant place. There's a great sense of belonging. But we are taught to be self-reliant and to make things happen for ourselves. And we are inspired to make things happen at a grassroots level."

So, while her ambition is to be an accountant, her larger goal is "to give back to SA what Cida is giving me." She has already started. Two years ago, she set up a homework club for school students in her mother's garage. It grew so large it had to move to a nearby school. Mnguni now tutors hundreds of students in maths, English, accounting and history.
