SAB, the SA operation of SABMiller, is SA's largest consumer company. It is also an instantly recognisable national asset and the largest contributor to the state, in terms of combined excise duties, company tax and Vat. Analysing SAB offers a delicious paradox. On the one hand, it is seductively simple. After all, it is a one-product company - it sells beverages, alcoholic and nonalcoholic. But on the other hand, it deals with the demands of consumers.
