TRANSFORMATION

Striving for equity

By Shoks Mzolo

Along with emphasising the attraction of the right personnel, the AltX-listed Accéntuate is doing its bit for transformation by focusing on employment equity.

The group's employment equity reports released last year show that it has "made some progress towards addressing the imbalances of the past while striving towards a situation where our company can be truly representative of the demographic realities in the areas in which we operate", Accéntuate chairman Malesela Motlatla wrote in the company's latest annual report.

"Much emphasis has been placed on attracting competent, energetic staff while at the same time, focusing on legislative requirements and social realities," says Motlatla, a prominent businessman who founded Malesela Holdings in the 1990s.

There is still a room for improvement in the equity arena, Motlatla acknowledges, noting that the executive, under the stewardship of CEO Fred Platt, is striving to achieve the desired results.

Accéntuate employs more than 500 people in its flooring, glassing and chemicals businesses. It is a known fact that, like its local peers, the group faces a shortage of skills.

That said, Accéntuate's attention is on "exceeding compliance targets through training and development to maximise individual potential and reduce the shortage of skills in our industry".

Motlatla takes pride in the fact that 32% of the company's shareholding is in black hands and is unencumbered. This is a pleasant surprise in the black economic empowerment landscape in which it is not uncommon for black partners to be heavily indebted.
